Since then, he has practiced in the areas of civil litigation in Virginia&#8217;s state and federal courts, land use, and business law. His clients include individuals and business owners throughout the greater Williamsburg area. In 2013, John was named the Assistant Commissioner of Accounts for the City of Williamsburg and James City County.<\/p>\n<p>John is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martindale.com\/John-Tarley-Jr\/1756235-lawyer.htm?view=cr\">Martindale-Hubbell featured AV Peer-Review Rated Lawyer<\/a>. In 2013, John was inducted into the <a href=\"http:\/\/law.wm.edu\/news\/stories\/2013\/virginia-law-foundation-inducts-six-wm-law-alumni-as-fellows-for-2013.php\">Fellows Program of the Virginia Law Foundation<\/a>. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virginialawfoundation.org\/fellowsprogram.htm\">Fellows Program<\/a> is limited to 1% of Virginia Lawyers and &#8220;confers induction on selected Virginia attorneys, law professors, and retired members of the judiciary who are deemed outstanding in their profession and in their community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>John represents numerous local businesses. As the owner of his own small business, John is aware of the issues entrepreneurs face, including contractual issues, employment issues, and leasing issues, among others.<\/p>\n<p>John has extensive courtroom experience. More importantly for our clients, John has extensive experience in negotiating and mediating disputes. Our clients know that John will look out for their interests and is willing and able to take a matter to trial, but also experienced in alternatives to litigation to meet our clients&#8217; goals at the lowest possible cost.<\/p>\n<p>John currently serves on the Planning Commission for the City of Williamsburg after previously serving on the City of Williamsburg&#8217;s Economic Development Authority. He provides years of knowledgeable experience in local economic conditions and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>John has earned the respect of the local legal community and has served since 1998 as a Commissioner of Chancery and since 2004 as a Judge Pro Tempore in the 9th Judicial Circuit, hearing and ruling on dozens of cases.<\/p>\n<p>In the community, John has served on several boards of local nonprofit organizations. John is chair of the Legal Redress Committee for the York County\/James City County\/Williamsburg Branch of the NAACP, and serves as Board Member and counsel for the Historic Virginia Land Conservancy.<\/p>\n<p>John has taught as an adjunct professor at the William &amp; Mary Law School since 2001, and in 2010, he received the <a href=\"http:\/\/law.wm.edu\/news\/stories\/2010\/john-tarley,-jr.-92-receives-st.-george-tucker-award.php\">St. George Tucker Adjunct Professorship Award<\/a>. The annual award &#8220;honors a member of the adjunct faculty for outstanding service.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He is also active in many professional organizations as well. John is a member of the Williamsburg Bar Association, where he served as President and Vice-President.
